Focusing on engaging students in learning reflects a level of respect for the learner. This alters the dynamic of school from something imposed on students to a recognition of the inherent free will of each individual to choose to participate (or not). Teachers and school leaders must understand that students, ultimately, do indeed have free will that can undermine even our best-laid plans. Students can choose if they are going to listen to their teachers, do their homework, show up for school each day, or put energy into learning. No matter how much educators like to think that the adults are in charge when it comes to schooling, ultimately, it is each student who will choose to buy-in, think, and learn—or not.
